Natalie Sommers is left to die in a filthy alley in the middle of nowhere.

Her body broken.

Her soul gone.

Her captor Kaige had one last parting gift for Natalie, the taste of Vampire blood in her mouth.

Natalie survives and as the Vampire blood takes hold chaining her to Kaige for her immortal life, something else happens.

Something that no one could have ever thought possible.

With the fire of her lover Malik in her heart and the Ancient power of Makkah in her veins, Natalie leaves humanity far behind and becomes not just a danger to others, but a danger to herself.

Can Natalie find a way back to her humanity? Can she find a way back to love?

Emergence, the latest addition in Kim Faulks’ series Fire & Ice, is a hit as it efficiently seals the gaps left at the end of Enslaved! This series continues to surprise me with nary a droll moment. And each new episode carries within it a web capturing my attention, every time.  Emergence gives testimony to that with its constant flourish of interlacing perceptions, like a kaleidoscope in constant motion ever changing.  All the characters are well-defined. The secondary characters lend an additional boom. They are well-placed and add color to the story. And the scenes’ symmetry need also be mentioned. Each is created to actively reflect the feelings of the characters’ emotions. Authors can sometimes lack in this area in shorter stories, forgetting that scenes are as instrumental to a story as are the characters, no matter the length.

I was delighted when Grayson’s character re-appeared. His character was first introduced in Reclaimed. So much was left unrequited at the end of Reclaimed when it came to Grayson as he watched Natalie leave with Malik to go to Arabia. I was so excited to finally learn more about Grayson and Natalie’s past.  And was it worth the wait!  The pages exploded with pent-up feelings that are finally exposed. And when Grayson finally connects with Natalie on a more visceral level, nothing existed in that moment but them. That’s the perfect storm…

What a clever juxtaposition Faulks has set for us to ponder by bringing Grayson back in the picture. Oh and what fun you’ll have finding out for yourself…All of that plus the other bombshells explored throughout Emergence will keep you turning the pages. Faulks’ ability to pack so many details in these sultry and zealous short stories can only be credited to her talent as a writer.

Kudos once again to Kim Faulks for a job well done.
